When the Game Boy Color hit the scene back in 1998, one of Nintendo's first duties was crafting new, full-colour editions of some of the platform's trademark titles. Tetris, The Legend of Zelda, Bomberman, R-Type, Wario Land and, of course, Super Mario were among the franchises that received a rainbow-washed facelift.
But no such rerelease was waiting in the wings (pun fully intended) for Pit: the angelic star of the most "bring back that franchise I've never actually played" series in gaming, Kid Icarus. That is all set to change, however, thanks to homebrewer Astronaut_Majestic, who is currently working on Kid Icarus DX, an unofficial Game Boy Color port of Pit's 1991 release Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters.
Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters finds our winged hero preparing for an incoming attack on Angel Land, perpetrated by the demon Orcos and his dark army of minions. To prepare him for the battle ahead, Palutena tasks Pit with gathering the three Sacred Treasures, proving himself worthy enough to face Orcos in the upcoming turf war.
Astronaut_Majestic is light on the details, modestly dropping a few work-in-progress screenshots and nothing more. But as you can see, the port is shaping up nicely, with the modest GBC palette lending a little more life and character to Palutena's domain. There is curiosity, excitement, and a little self-effacing humour in the comments on Reddit - but GBC fans will no doubt be happy to have another full-colour title in the catalogue.
In the meantime, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters is available (in monochrome form) on Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo Classics service.
