Re: "They Had No Idea What They Were Doing" - Amico Teardown Sheds Light On Doomed Intellivision Console

I read a pretty good theory about the Amico that claims it was all done with the express purpose of attracting a buyer, before any kind of production would begin.

In the ideal scenario: Tommy and his cohorts would sell the entire business to an interested party and ride off into the sunset, their part in everything fulfilled. Manufacturing was never supposed to be their responsibility.

What always stood out about the Amico concept to me is how it seemed to be a solution looking for a problem. Who was it supposed to even be for?

Children are smarter than what Tommy and Phil were giving them credit for. The average six year old already knows how to play stuff like Minecraft and Slime Rancher. Simple game BORE them.

Casuals and old folks have no shortage of free-to-play time-wasters on the Apple store and Google Play. They're not interested in forking out $10-$15 for a game with all the depth of something from the Atari 2600.

Retrogamers don't want oversimplified versions of games they can get cheaper, on platforms they already own.

Couch multiplayer is alive and well. Amico wasn't going to "bring it back", as it never left.
