What's the scariest game of all time? No. It's 3D Monster Maze. There's nothing in gaming all of history more frightening than being silently informed that Rex is "beside you." Take yo big-ass head back to your crib, Resident Evil Village Baby.

Video games have been delivering armies of horrific, nightmare-inducing monstrosities ever since their inception. I know somebody who was scared as a child when coming face-to-face with Taito's Space Invaders cabinet, terrified by its spiky, void-like creatures lurching toward her. Hell, I knew a kid who was scared of this Commodore Format poster for Chuck Rock.

It wasn't me. No, I was scared by the Atari Star Wars cabinet. That, and the cover of Lou Reed's Transformer. 22, I was.

Video games have delivered some death-dealing doozies over the past 50 years. Sometimes, baddies come as cute turtles, clumsily losing their shells with a quick bump on the noggin. Other times, they come as staggering faceless nurses, giant, wall-crawling tarantulas, faded animatronic theme park mascots, or indestructible, laboratory-developed meat men - all of whom are gearing up to perform a you-assisted life-ectomy.

In the spirit of today's spooky Halloween festivities, we will be scattering a selection of our features, new and old, on some particularly ghoulish games. But to kick things off, we hope that you will creep into the comments below and share with us some of your favourite scary characters from the history of horror games.

What pixelated terrors sent chills down your spine and left a deep cut (literally in some cases) on your soul? There are no real "rules" here; you can share stories of unsettling big bads from recent releases, or simplistic-but-scary sprites that terrified you as a toddler. After all, who are Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde if not vengeful souls lost in a labyrinthine purgatory of Power Pellets and Fruit?

Did Resident Evil's Cerberus give you a perpetual fear of windows? Does Sinistar's synthesised voice haunt your dreams? Was Alien: Isolation's apex predator too much to handle? Or will you never look through a viewfinder again, lest you encounter the haunting apparitions of Fatal Frame? When you think of "scary games", what creatures and characters instantly spring to mind? Right before they dig in their claws and rip that mind right outta your skull.

Now let's get spooky! I'm going trick-or-treating at the Sony Centre, dressed as a DISC! WhooooOOOOO!

Happy Halloween from Time Extension!
