One of the major selling points of the Game Boy - particularly its slimmer Game Boy Pocket variant - was the fact that, as the name denotes, it fit in your pocket. Super portable, top-notch gaming on the go, ready to be crushed into your Levi's at a whim. But what if you had massive pockets? Pockets as big as a garage? Didn't think of that, did you, Nintendo? (If that is your real name)
Fortunately, help is at hand in the form of curious constructor Paige Powell (Whats_Paige_Making), who built a special edition of the Pokémon Game Boy Color that stands around five feet in height, taking the time to consider those players whose pants are a little on the larger side. Powell has uploaded several videos to their Instagram showing the construction and operation of the wooden 'handheld'.
Yes, you can actually play Pokémon on the supersized device! Even the Power Switch and volume dial are hooked up.
Powell's model is an authentic upscale of Nintendo's limited-edition Game Boy, which was released in 1999 to celebrate the launch of the stupendously selling Pokémon Yellow. Powell thanks the similarly-minded tinkering of coder and designer Nick Alvarez (Nickbuildstuff) for their help in adapting the shell into a fully working console... if you have three-foot carts on hand.
Amazingly, this isn't even the biggest Game Boy the duo has built, as other videos feature a larger, lime-green Game Boy Color, previously constructed by Alvarez. And it doesn't end there, as the two huge handhelds are shown trading Pokémon via, you guessed it, a giant, fully working Link Cable, complete with pulsating green LEDs, as though you can see the data physically travelling between the two units.
As with so many of the construction projects we feature here on Time Extension, there is a clear vibe of "why not?" at play. I'm not sure who needs one giant Game Boy, let alone several, and certainly with working link ports.
But that's just the point. As I've noted before, tinkerers, creators, and artists often Do Things simply to Do Things. Sometimes it brings reward, sometimes fame, and sometimes simple satisfaction and joy. And you never need a reason to invoke the latter.
Now we just need a giant-sized Handy Boy, and we got it made.
