Japanese developer BeXide revealed that its Voxel-based puzzler, Namco Legendary Mountains, will be released on iOS and Android today, following on from its PC and Nintendo Switch release back in June.
The colourful, "physics-stacker" tasks players with filling a shallow bowl with "capsule" spheres, each containing a voxel model of an iconic character from Namco's classic coin-op era.
The goal is to match up (or "merge") characters to create chains, while freeing up space in the playing area for more capsules, all while preventing the ever-growing stack from spilling out over the bowl's edge. Think of typical tile puzzles but with added elements of balance and inertia.
The trailer below demonstrates the concept better than I can explain it. (CONTAINS FLASHING IMAGERY)
Namco Legendary Mountains gameplay concept is adapted from a similar puzzler, Suika, replacing that game's strawberries and watermelons with delightful voxel models of characters from titles such as Dig Dug, Mappy, Xevious, The Tower of Druaga, and, of course, Pac-Man. As players complete various in-game challenges, they will unlock 3D models of these characters to enjoy in their own digital dioramas.
That's all well and good, but I do wish some of these voxel models were available in real-world form. They're quite cute and cool, and I'd definitely pick up the Dig Dug set and the Pac-Man cast. Nobody wants Cop Mappy.
Namco Legendary Mountains launches today on iOS and Android. Also available now on PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
