It's fair to say that 80's classics The Legend of Zelda and The Tower of Druaga have influenced countless video games over the years.

Zelda not only established the template for a series which has sold millions since its inception in 1986, but it has also inspired a host of imitators over the decades.

Namco's The Tower of Druaga might not be as famous as Zelda, but its impact was considerable, especially in its native Japan – and Shigeru Miyamoto apparently had a Druaga cabinet in his office at one point, so it's fair to say that it will have had some influence in the genesis of Link's debut on the Famicom / NES.

These two great action adventures are now being fused in the form of The Tower of Zeldaga, a fan-made mash-up created by Osmose. It's free to play, runs in your browser, and even works on mobile. You can also connect controllers to play it.

"Every room has a secret puzzle, and the puzzles get more obtuse as you go on," says the developer, who explains that there was originally a means of paying tribute to the real-world manner in which Japanese players would leave notes on the arcade cab to help future players.

"I had planned to add per-room guestbooks and maybe let people create groups so they could solve with a group of friends," says Osmose. "But hosting arbitrary content from other people online gets really hairy really quickly, so I ended up dropping it.
