Nothing about the Playdate even remotely suggests 'slop' - it's one of the most considered and joy-inducing gadgets I own - but to each their own, it's not for everyone. As for the screen, it has its downsides, but the upsides are long battery life and the ability to play it outside in the sun and have the screen be totally clear and legible. None of my other handhelds can boast the same.
I'm getting some Bionic Commando and Operation Wolf vibes too. Particularly the end of Bionic Commando where you (spoiler) blow Hitler's head apart. Peak NES gaming!
Another Tetris option worth sharing: For those willing to futz around a bit, I've found that Pandora's Blocks (formerly DMGTRIS) works well with the gameboy emulator for the Playdate, PlayGB. It's heavily inspired by Tetris: The Grand Master, and has a ton of options/features. https://git.villadelfia.org/villadelfia/dmgtris
Under the Castle is the best Playdate game I've ever played. I think it's absolutely fantastic. Better than any of the Season 1 games, which is a pretty high bar to clear, as I loved many of those as well.
I can at least confirm that Playdate games purchased on itch.io will run fine on a Steam Deck. It takes a bit of setup to get the Playdate Simulator running, but then it works nicely. Rotating the right analog joystick replaces the crank.
(Unfortunately, I believe Pullfrog Deluxe is a Catalog exclusive and isn't available on itch.io)
I didn't realize this game takes place in 1917 in the middle of World War I, and you play through different European countries with that backdrop. Like in stage 4 you explore a munitions factory in Germany. Sounds wild as a setting for a Castlevania game...
