The A1200 is just around the corner and follows in the footsteps of the A500 Mini, an Amiga-based micro-console from UK specialist Retro Games Ltd.

A full-sized reproduction of Commodore's powerful home computer, the A1200 comes pre-loaded with a selection of classic games, runs Workbench, and can be upgraded with additional titles via USB storage.

Retro Games Ltd has produced several other replica systems, and given that it already has two Amiga clones on the market, one might assume it will be turning its attention to other, unrelated projects – but in a recent interview with Retro Gamer magazine, the company's licensing director Darren Melbourne suggests that we could be seeing more Amiga devices on the horizon.

"You know what," replies Melbourne when asked if Retro Games Ltd is finished with the Amiga. "As much as I'm going to get kicked for this statement, watch this space. Let's put it this way, I think the Amiga journey is beginning, not ending."

As for what he could possibly mean by that, your guess is as good as mine. As we've already established, the A500 Mini exists, and it's worth pointing out that the A1200 is capable of emulating the Amiga 500, 600, 1200, 4000 and CD32 – so what else could possibly be part of the company's range that fits the bill in the future?

We could potentially see a CD32-shaped console using the same chipset (the A500 Mini and A1200 share the same basic silicon, although the newer machine benefits from 'low-level improvements and optimisations', according to Retro Games Ltd), but that would surely be one for completists only. Perhaps Melbourne is referring to something Amiga-based, which is more forward-focused; after all, the OS is still in active development and issues regarding the ownership of the name have finally been resolved.

The same interview also covers the wider reasons for the delay, why the A1200 outputs at 720p, and how much fuss it was to secure the pre-installed games. Be sure to check it out by picking up a copy of the magazine.
