Re: SNES Consoles Appear To Be Getting Faster As They Age

dwangoAC

Hi all, dwangoAC here - we are still working on publishing our conclusions and should have more details soon so please follow TASBot on Bluesky or hop over to the TASBot Discord server for more info. One piece we're adding is the practical impact this has, including data showing the rise in pitch of a note being played as the APU in the SNES warms up. We don't think this will have an impact on speedrunning, but performing a console verification by playing a TAS back on a replay device is absolutely impacted.

For those wondering, I replaced an APU's clock with a quartz crystal in 2016 but the results weren't what we expected - several games assumed the APU ran faster than the 32 kHz specified and misbehave with audio artifacts on slower consoles.
