Re: Nintendo Wii Games Are Finally Getting RetroAchievement Support Next Year

@Sketcz "I am sorry you felt personally attacked by my statement. My intention is not to upset people."

You compared people who like achievements to people who drink that wine.

Personally, I see achievements as a sort of record of how much I engaged in a game (when I beat a particular boss and all that). And, if I like the game enough, it becomes like a travel guide for seeing all of the nooks and crannies of the game. I work in IT, so that kind of data is interesting to me.

"So when I see people dismissing these beautiful creations, because they don't have cheevos, I feel actual nauseau."
"But the growing obsession over cheevos / trophies, and the need to have them everywhere, feels like a sort of cognitive virus that is spreading. Developers now design games around cheevos. People refuse to play old games because they don't have cheevos."
"the misguided belief that a game without cheevos is a game without value."

I agree with all of these. These are valid reasons to dislike achievements.

"I love games for the games. My mind is incapable of comprehending those who say a game is pointless without cheevos. These poor lost souls need help; they need guidance; they need re-education."

And this is just elitist crap. It's like saying people who like collecting stamps need re-education, because you can send mail by just buying a single stamp at the post office.

Maybe you're completely right. Maybe these people wouldn't play games if achievements didn't exist. But that simply means fewer people will play games overall. And I think that would also a detriment to the gaming community. Not everyone needs to be a higher art connoisseur to play video games.
