With even Miyamoto seeing ALTTP as the “true” sequel, I feel like there’s a lot of parallels between Zelda and Metroid. The sequel was divisive and experimental, but then the SNES entry is a true sequel in the sense that it’s everything that the original aspired to be but fully realized due to the more powerful hardware. Mario Bros would probably be in this camp too if not for the existence of Mario 3.
