After last week's detour into the world of F1 with Ace Driver Victory Lap, Arcade Archives creator Hamster is taking players to a land time forgot!

SNK's dinosaur-themed shmup Prehistoric Isle is coming to Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on Thursday, October 29th 2026, bringing back an assortment of terrifying, previously extinct creatures to outmanoeuvre and do battle with as the pilot of an aircraft tasked with exploring a series of mysterious shipwrecks in the Bahamas.

Originally released in arcades in 1989, the pre-Neo Geo game is, for the most part, a horizontally scrolling shooter that lets players explore five different environments in and around Greenhell Island, the game's mysterious setting that has been frozen in time. This includes verdant forests patrolled by angry cavemen, pterodactyl-infested skies, deadly caves, shark-infested oceans, and the island's volcanic core.

Each of these comes with its own boss to dispatch, as well as a series of power-ups to increase your speed (the 'S' symbol), add to your high score (the '$' sign), and up your arsenal with a rotatable pod that can be configured in various ways around your ship for different benefits (the 'P' symbol), from dropping mines to increasing your existing firepower.

When Prehistoric Isle was initially released, reviews (in the UK, at least) were mostly positive, with Sinclair User notably giving the title a 10/10, describing it as "the most original, colourful, playable shooter for ages," while Computer & Video Games praised the action and the "rousing" soundtrack, giving it 81% overall. Since its release, the game has been included as one of the playable titles on the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

It also previously received a sequel, the imaginatively titled Prehistoric Isle 2, in 1999 (which was already made available on Arcade Archives in 2018).

This new Hamster release will be priced at $7.99 on PS4 and Nintendo Switch, and $9.99 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. As always, it will come packed with a few new modes to try out, as well as online leaderboards and screen filters.
