Almost six years ago, a small Japan-based developer called Foxy Boxy Games released ROBO OH, a Famicom-inspired fighting game for PC (Steam) about a group of robots battling it out in a tournament to be declared the "king".
The game, in question, went on to receive unanimous user reviews on Steam following its release, and has continued to be updated in the years since, even receiving a network mode earlier this year, thanks to beta servers located in Japan and the US. It seems, though, that isn't the only thing the team has been working on behind the scenes, with the developer teasing that a follow-up, called Super ROBO OH, is also on the way.
As the name suggests, Super ROBO OH ditches the Nintendo Famicom-style limitations of the original to take advantage of 16-bit graphics and sound, and it's shaping up pretty nicely based on some of the initial clips shared online.
Looking at the footage available, for instance, the game immediately brings to mind a ton of different things I have an affinity for: from Natsume's fighting game work from the early-to-mid 90s (games like Shin Kidō Senki Gundam Wing: Endless Duel and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition) to Konami's pre-Street Fighter II arcade fighting game Galactic Warriors, and famous childhood toys like Transformers and Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots.
According to the website, Super ROBO OH will not only include "returning characters plus new Robots," but will also feature new expanded techniques, as well as parts, colours, and other upgrades to soup up your character and take the fight to your rivals.
Unfortunately, not much is known beyond that, but the developer has given a brief description, giving a general overview of what to expect:
"Super ROBO OH is an upcoming tournament-fighting game and sequel to ROBO OH.
Robots are detailed and colourful in the visuals and sound of SFC in the 16-bit era. New chapters expand the ROBO OH universe, revealing the fate of MAXCYBER, and introducing new robots to the battle.
Now, the fight becomes Super with Super ROBO OH!"
A webpage for the game is already live, with a Steam page and an official demo set to launch later this year, judging from the developer's latest post.
