First and foremost, I’m all about video game preservation. I also personally don’t have an issue with doing what is described in the article.
However, I don’t think this is legal, at least not in the US (I can’t speak for the UK). The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) prohibits copying media by bypassing encryption or other security measures that would otherwise prevent the copying.
While Anbernic and other Chinese handheld manufacturers do enjoy copying each other, I don't think that's what's happening in this case. Anbernic released the 351V in February 2021 and it had this same exact layout.
I'm confused as to why the RG40XX H is being compared to the RG Cube. While both are horizontal handhelds, they are wildly different in terms of specs.
As mentioned in the review, the RG40XX H has an Allwinner H700 processor, which is great for retro games up to some Dreamcast and N64. However, the RG Cube has a Unison 820 processor. This processor can run up to some PS2 and Gamecube games. It's also the same processor in the RG556 and compares to the Dimensity 900 (D900) processor in the Retroid Pocket 4 (non-pro).
