Great read, this is a subject that has long interested me. Wikipedia is not "supposed to" create new nomenclature like this, so it has been quite a conundrum to either rewrite a ton of articles or find sources for numbered generations. The Switch also caused a whole lot of problems.

What I'd like to add though, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and perhaps some other magazines, would also refer to "generations" as every year of a console. So the first generation of PlayStation games were the games that came out in the first year of the PlayStation's life. There are examples of games coming out in the fourth year of the PlayStation and reviews would complain that it "looked like a first generation PS game". The expectation seemed to be that games would look better every year. I only recall seeing this in relation to PlayStation 1 games.
