Re: "No Emulation, No Compromise, No Comparison" - The $250 Neo Geo+ AES Aims To Be A 1:1 Replica Of SNK's Classic Console

Shred

While the marketing leans into 'No Compromise' the reality of the Neo Geo was always a compromise of substance for the sake of spectacle. It was the first system to prove you could sell a lack of innovation as long as the graphics were pretty enough. A "hollow center" problem that has become the blueprint for the industry's stagnation in 2026.

SNK were never architects, they were world-class interior decorators. SNK and ADK basically spent a decade trying to out-spectacle Street Fighter II, Contra, Final Fight and R-Type without actually innovating on the game design. While the true architects at Capcom, Sega, Konami, Taito and Namco were busy building the blueprints for the genres we still play today, SNK was content to spend a decade applying gold leaf paint to rooms like the 2D fighter that others had already built. Just look at the gulf between Capcom vs. SNK 2 and SVC Chaos. You’re seeing the difference between innovation and a re-skin.

Clinging to the 68k chipset for 14 years wasn't about "legacy", it was a refusal to evolve. The MVS was built for the efficiency of the arcade owner, not the innovation of the gamer and was actually a creative cage for SNK.
The fact that the industry went from the NES to the Xbox in that same timeframe is crazy work.
By the late '90s SNK was busy perfecting the candle while the rest of the world was installing lightbulbs and this $250 replica aims to celebrate that history.
