A dedicated preservationist has rescued and reactivated one of the rarest titles in the Shining series. Shining Wind X, a mobile spin-off/sequel to 2007's Shining Wind, was deleted years ago by publisher Sega, but Yuvi ("YuviApp"), a modder dedicated to preserving titles long thought lost, has recently saved the obscure release from oblivion.
Originally launched in 2008, Shining Wind X ("Shining Wind Cross") showcases the continuing adventures of the cast featured in its PS2 predecessor, replacing the standard hack 'n' slash action gameplay with turn-based tactical battles. The original Shining Wind came late in the PS2's life and thus saw little to no appreciation outside its native Japan - despite Shining's long history within the RPG genre.
Having located and extracted a working copy of Shining Wind X, which has long been discontinued, Yuvi has generously added one more piece of gaming history to the archives. Shining Wind X is now expected to be added to the Keitai World Launcher, a retirement home of sorts for mobile game abandonware, letting players check out these lost, micro-sized pieces of history.
Despite Shining's deep legacy, Sega has yet to compile its myriad entries for modern release. So anyone interested in dipping into the fantasy franchise's 30-year history will be best served going down the emulation, Virtual Console, or original hardware route.
