One of the original entities of the highly dubious "Kids Get Killed" gaming genre, Corpse-Party, has received a newly enhanced remaster in the form of Corpse-Party Rebuilt+, offering frightened freshmen and sadistic sophomores a new way to experience the ghastly goings-on of the contest-winning PC-9801 release.

Released in 1996 and developed in RPGMaker, Corpse-Party tells the story of a group of students who find themselves whisked off to a nightmarish alternate reality, where they each succumb to a hideous fate at the hands of a malevolent (and maleviolent) force. While the original game was somewhat unassuming in form, the Corpse Party series would expand into a huge multimedia franchise - spawning increasingly brutal sequels and remakes, as well as a manga series, numerous anime OVAs, and even a 2015 live-action movie.

Corpse-Party Rebuilt+ is an update of the very first PC-9801 adventure; not any of its rereleases or remakes - occasionally becoming confused due to a cacophony of release windows, platforms, and localised naming conventions. Corpse-Party Rebuilt+ is a fan-enhanced version of a fan-developed remaster of the very first game to bear the Corpse-Party name, as developed by Makoto Kedōin in 1996.

Ya dig? If not, pluck out your eyeballs and re-read the last paragraph. And then eat them.

Enhanced by coder and fan Saralene, Corpse-Party Rebuilt+ adds a host of new features and improvements to the previous version of Corpse-Party Rebuilt, including config options for resolution, audio, and controller input (now with improved mouse support) and an uncapped framerate supporting 60 FPS+ displays.

Rebuilt+ also features the option to replicate the visual and audio quality of original PC-98 hardware, along with numerous quality-of-life adjustments. These include a Skip Event feature, a reviewable message log, and a useful visual indicator of which of the game's many endings have been unlocked. Most notably, Saralene's new edition features a bevvy of Yami-Kawaii bug fixes. Saralene also notes that all of their work has been implemented without resorting to A.I. tools. Kudos to you.

The Corpse Party franchise really is something else, featuring grim, miserable storytelling and scenes of horrific juvenile violence while maintaining the tropes of friendship, romance, and trauma typically featured in Japanese student fiction. The series would get seemingly more gruesome with each entry, while simultaneously becoming a tongue-in-cheek parody of itself. This is not to speak of several spin-off titles and a multi-threaded timeline that would make Michael Myers drop his carving knife in shock.

And it all started right here, with a creepy, homespun PC-9801 RPG. If you're feeling curious this spooky season, perhaps you could take a stab at it. And if this particular entry is a little too archaic for your tastes, then remake Corpse Party (2021) is available now on PS4, PSP, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo 3DS.
