Civilisation Gets Ported to the Neo Geo Pocket, and No AI Was Involved 1

When Sid Meier's Civilisation launched in 1991, it blazed a trail that many other 4X strategy titles have followed. The series continues to receive new instalments to the present day and has spawned many imitators.

One system it has never graced is the Neo Geo Pocket, but that has changed thanks to the efforts of homebrew coder Chris Ahchay.

Ahchay is working on a port for the NGPC that brings Meier's home computer classic to the (very) small screen, and while it still has some way to go, it already looks impressive.

The management screens all work, and you can allocate workers, assign non-working citizens as specialists, and manage research, but there's currently no game-over detection, so if your empire falls, you'll be stuck helplessly watching the NPCs go about their business. The number of unit types is also limited at present, and the full selection of city improvements isn't complete yet.

Still, what Ahchay has achieved so far is commendable – and he gets extra points for avoiding the help of AI. "I do not use AI/LLMs in any part of my development process," he says on the game's itch.io page. Bravo.
