It's that time of year again. Time to slather yourself in sun lotion, grab your biggest paperback, and hop on board the Desert Bus for another sweaty, non-stop, 45 M.P.H. trip across the empty plains of Arizona.

Friday, October 23, will see the return of Desert Bus for Hope, a long-running charity marathon wherein a group of hapless volunteers step forward to play one of the most tedious, torturous, and draining games ever made.

For those unaware, Desert Bus was a mini-game featured in the unreleased Sega Mega CD compilation Penn & Teller's Smoke & Mirrors. In the notorious road-ripper, players are tasked with driving a rickety old bus along an interstate route that leads from Tucson, Arizona, to Las Vegas, Nevada.

The bus travels along a straight road for the entire duration of the journey, locked to a maximum speed of 45 M.P.H. The worn-down vehicle veers to the right, requiring perpetual (but only minor) steering adjustments. There are no other vehicles on the road, no turns, and very little scenery. While you can open the bus doors at each of the route's various stops, no one will ever board.

The journey takes place in real time - about eight hours. There is no pause button.

Desert Bus for Hope, which began in 2007 and has run annually since, gathers groups of well-meaning sadists to play the torturous title continuously. A rotational roster of drivers and passengers plays the game, and performs challenges, while taking donations from Twitch viewers. A custom donor system ensures that the journey will continue for as long as donations arrive, with each donation incrementally increasing in value with every passing hour.

Over the past 18 years, this brutal gaming endeavour has cumulatively raised just shy of an incredible $13 million USD, with all donations going directly to Child's Play, a registered charity that delivers toys, games, and technology to a network of over 180 children's hospitals. The most successful run took place in 2024, when the stream raised a staggering $1,252,690.69 over the course of over 168 (essentially a full week.)

Desert Bus for Hope 2026 hits the gas Friday, October 23 at 16:00 PDT.

All aboard...
