Hamster Corporation, the company behind Arcade Archives, has revealed that the next Console Archives title coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 will be the NES version of the Taito arcade classic Bubble Bobble.

Designed by Japanese developer Fukio Mitsuji, Bubble Bobble was originally released in arcades in 1986, where it immediately became one of the company's biggest hits and soon spawned a variety of console and home-computer ports. Among these was a 1987 version for the Famicom Disk System, developed in-house at Taito, which was later localised and launched on the NES in 1988.

As you'd expect, the "8-bit title" features almost identical gameplay to the original arcade hit, once again putting players in control of Bub & Bob, two boys who are transformed into a pair of colourful dragons.

Tasked with saving their girlfriends, players are given the job of guiding the pair of dragons through the Cave of Monsters, a series of 100 perilous stages filled with an assortment of offbeat monsters, trapping enemies in bubbles and popping them to clear each level.

Hamster previously released the arcade version on PS4 and Switch as part of Arcade Archives in 2016 and 2022, respectively, but has now decided to follow it up with the NES version, letting players experience another take on the same classic gameplay, with some emulation-style bonuses thrown in like customisable buttons, save states, and CRT filters.

The reissue is expected to land on PS5 and Switch 2 tomorrow, on August 26th, 2026 (a date officially recognised as Bub & Bob's official birthday), and will cost $7.99, in total.
