A brand new episode of Quake has just been released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of id Software's FPS classic.
Dawn of the Machine was announced yesterday at QuakeCon and is a free update for those who own the 2021 enhanced version of Quake.
Once again, it sees id Software teaming up with Machine Games (which was previously responsible for creating the episodes Dimension of the Past and Dimension of the Machine) to deliver a challenging new campaign featuring 19 all-new maps, a brand new soundtrack, hidden secrets, "brutal" weapon variants, and "deadly... twists on familiar foes."
The announcement promises "ferocious combat, labyrinthine level design, and nightmarish realms that twist reality beyond recognition," with the idea behind the expansion being to push "the legacy of the genre-defining first-person shooter even further", in the hopes of "honouring one of gaming’s most enduring icons":
"Ranger is trapped in a dimension of endless illusion—reliving the same violent cycles for what feels like lifetimes, dying thousands of times in a futile attempt to escape. Wearied but unbroken, he has heard rumor of The Nightmare Machine.
"Beyond the hordes of monsters—twisted by an eternity in the Elder realms—lies the Machine. It is believed its destruction will shatter the illusion, finally breaking the loop."
Here's a trailer:
If you want to give it a try, the expansion is already live on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, the Microsoft PC Store, PC (via Steam), PS5, and PS4.
Worth noting is that this isn't the only Quake announcement we've seen over the last 24 hours either, with Nine Inch Nails (a band spearheaded by Quake composer Trent Reznor) unveiling some 30th limited edition merch for the anniversary, including a t-shirt, hoody, a keyring, and a rerelease of the game's soundtrack on vinyl.
