Original Story [Fri 22nd Sep, 2023 10:45 BST]: The pre-launch page for AYANEO's latest handheld gaming PC, the AYANEO Slide, is coming later today to IndieGoGo.
Packing an AMD Ryzen 7840U chipset and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the Slide joins the likes of the AYANEO Air 1S and AYANEO Kun in the company's expanding lineup of gaming-focus handhelds.
The system boasts a 6-inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display which slides upward to reveal the keyboard – which has RGB backlit keys.
The device is powered by a 46.2 Wh battery and boasts Hall Sensor analogue sticks for a drift-free experience.
The page will go live at 3:30 PM, Japanese Standard Time – because the company is currently demonstrating its wares at the Tokyo Game Show.

I'm a sucker for a slide out keyboard, but I'm guessing I can't afford one of these and likely never will be able to!
Never been a fan of these mini keyboards, in my experience they just aren't that great to use. Honestly this whole design just sort of reminds me of something like an old UMPC or one of those early texting phones they had back in the 00's before they came out with decent touch screens. Considering the capabilities of modern touch screens and how awkward these mini keys are to use, I think this is a bit of a redundant design for this day and age.
Just how many devices can AyaNeo release in one year? 😅
That said, I’m on holiday at the moment and spent some of the afternoon hacking the SF2 Turbo ROM on my Steam Deck and the lack of keyboard made it so much fiddlier, especially as the on-screen keyboard covers half the screen! 😩🤣
Assuming this is a Windows device like its bigger brother, rather than Android like the pocket version, this could be the first such device to actually convince me to make the jump. Configuring the multitude of emulators and software that I'd want on this type of device with an onscreen keyboard (or even fiddling with attaching an external one each time I want to tweak something) sounds like a nightmare and if a device tlike this could also replace my need for a laptop when going on small trips or doing business in coffee shops etc, I'm sold.
Good idea in theory but the trouble is, with joysticks and controller buttons getting in the way I can't see this being much easier to use as a keyboard as a virtual touchscreen one. It's not like you can hold it on both sides and use the keyboard. Meaning the only real advantage here is it saves screen real estate when using the keyboard. It has it's uses but it's niche imho.
There is 0 reason to get one of these. And I'm someone who likes slide out devices too. Who thought this was a good design? It's not like you can just hold it and type with your thumbs, you'd have to set it down, or at the very least, cradle it in one hand, and pseudo type with the other. The steam deck has the best on screen keyboard of any device I've ever used and is a fraction of the prices of this without the flimsy screen.
Maybe if you really need to use it as a hybrid pc it could be useful, but I don't know how good that keyboard actually is. And speaking as someone who owns a full pc that can fit in my pocket, this is not scratching that itch for me either
as someone already said, how are you supposed to reach the keyboard? holding it, with your thumbs? squeezing your fingers between the controls? raising the device to your face, and using the tip of your nose? 🥸
a better design would have the entire face of the device, screen and controls and all, slide upwards, exposing a full-width keyboard of a usable size. the "screen" portion could then tilt upward, maybe with a kickstand, to create kind of a tiny laptop.
i would trade every device this company has released for one well designed, useful thing at a reasonable price.
You guys don't get it at all! You put it on your desk or lap like a laptop. Then you put on the 10x custom pointy thimble accessories (Thimblonger TM patent pending) and go full 10-fingered typing at 170 words per minute.
