Capcom's Street Fighter turned 35 last year and Street Fighter 6 is just around the corner, so now is as good a time as any to ask the most important of questions; no, not "what's the meaning of life?" or "why do I only have odd socks in my underwear drawer?" We're talking about the real big question facing mankind: "Which Street Fighter game is the absolute best?"
To answer this query, we've revived this article (which was originally published with a basic poll in August last year) to hopefully give us some idea what you – the games-playing public – think is the best instalment in the long-running franchise. Using our fancy user rating system, the results of this will directly influence our 'best Street Fighter game' list, which we'll be publishing very shortly.
We've tried to include every Street Fighter variant we can think of, as well as a few left-field choices (such as Capcom Fighting Evolution), but if you feel we've left a title out that should be included, drop us a line in the comments to tell us.

That would be 3rd Strike, Mr. Damien.
NINJA APPROVED
Street Fighter II Turbo - or New Challengers, but I always forget the differences. 3rd strike would be most likely my next fave though!
Ultra street fighter II. Because that's the only one I've played. 😆
I loved X-Men vs Street Fighter on the Saturn, I played it back then as an import and with the 4MB RAM cartridge it looked stunning, plus you have the best controller to play these games with 😉
@NeilFlynnGaming Street Fighter II Turbo was an update of Championship Edition. It gave characters a few new movies, like Chun Li can throw fireballs and had the speed cranked up. New Challengers was the update to that where it introduced Cammy, Fei Long, Dee Jay and Thunder Hawk to the game.
Third Strike. That being said I love Ultra/HD Turbo II and Ultra IV.
3rd strike without a doubt not just a great street fighter game but one of my all time favourite games
Unpopular opinion I know but I picked SFV Champion Edition. SFV just felt like it hit the perfect spot of being not too complex and not too simple to me. It had the best roster in the series and had the best version of arcade mode of the series.
I've played every main entry in the series as well as the Alpha series. They're all great games but to me SFV is the best balanced experience.
Ultra II and Super IV for me, though I voted for Ultra II since I've played it more.
I probably have hundreds of hours on my original SFII SNES cart, but as great as that game is, it doesn't hold up well compared to later itirations.
Ooo that's tough... Personally It'd have to be a 3.5-way tie between SF2 Champion/Turbo, Alpha 3, and the original version of 4, as those were the ones I was exposed to the most. Didn't play any of the III series until years later on PS3
Alpha 2, it reminds me of my childhood. Plenty of good memories of my friends, gaming rentals, peaceful days...
I actually prefer the Alpha games. I had trouble choosing between Alpha 2 and 3... I ultimately voted for 3, but they're pretty much tied for me.
This is a tough call. It seemed like each Street Fighter game was just right for the time it was released.
Not many games can make that claim.
I voted 3rd Strike, but Alpha 2 is a close 2nd for me. I was glad to see it get a good percentage of the votes.
Didn’t realize Third Strike was so popular, but I agree with that assessment. SF2 and 3 are fantastic. 4 was ok, but in all honesty that was sort of a nadir season for fighting games when it released. I feel like I was pretty disappointed in every fighter I picked up in the PS3/360 era with 3D visuals, outside Virtua Fighter 5. 5, I liked well enough, but it didn’t feel essential at release the way 2 and 3 did. Hoping 6 is top shelf. The beta made it seem like it could be possible. I’m not competitive with fighters anymore, so I’m hopeful for a good story mode nowadays.
2 turbo, alpha 3, and 3rd strike will always be the kings to me. MvC1 gets an honorable mention.
@Andee Similarly I'd go for SFII Turbo, Super SF II, SF Alpha 2 (all SNES), original IV (PS3) and SF 30th Anniversary Collection (Switch), SF 30th in particular as it's so packed with content.
Too many bloody versions. As much as people complain about live service elements and DLC Street Fighter II was the perfect example of game that needed updates and DLC rather than being re-released AT FULL PRICE year on year. Add sports games to that list too.
Alpha 3 [PS1 or Arcade], 4 [PC, PS3 or 360] and Third Strike [despite some terrible characters] for me. Did not care for 5.
I think some people are going to miss that the poll choices spill over to a second page. My top pick is on page two, and that's X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter is probably its equal with some improvements, but some things I like less. I was just playing those along with regular Marvel Super Heroes in recent weeks. I am enjoying them more now than I ever did back in the day, but that's probably because the Marvel stuff wasn't doing it for me in 1997 and 1998. The Alpha and SF3 series never appealed to me. King of Fighters was more my style instead. As for plain SF2, Champion Edition was always my favorite version.
You left off Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo for 3DO!
For me, it's gotta be Alpha 2 Gold, for sure. I love the art-style and the music is god-tier.
I have a soft spot for the 3ds version sf4.. and the xbox 360 version , mainly because I bought that one in Madrid
Super Street Fighter II Grand Master Challenge in the arcade has the special sauce for me. Alpha 2 on the Saturn was a long time favourite.
