Sony's PlayStation 3 just got a new software update – 16 years after it first launched.

PS3 System Software Update Version 4.90 doesn't seem to do much – according to Sony, it is focuses on improving system performance – but hey, it proves there's life in the old dog yet.

As is so often the case with such updates, we'd imagine there's some security stuff going on behind the scenes to make the PS3 more robust – but it begs the question, why is Sony concerned about keeping such an old system secure?

We've just updated our PS3 to 4.90, which has given us the ideal excuse to play Ridge Racer 7 for the rest of the day. Let us know if you've updated your system by leaving a comment below.
