Leslie Phillips, celebrated actor and voice of Gex in the UK version of Gex: Enter the Gecko, has died aged 98, Entertainment Weekly confirmed earlier today.

Phillips, who was best known for his roles in the Carry-On films, Harry Potter, and as the voice of Gex the Gecko in the Crystal Dynamics platformer from 1998, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday morning, his agent told Entertainment Weekly.

Phillips was born in Tottenham, England on April 20th, 1924, and started his career in acting back in the 1930s in small uncredited roles. He later appeared in over 200 films, putting in notable appearances as The Sorting Hat in Harry Potter and as part of an ensemble cast in four Carry On films: Carry On Nurse (1959), Carry On Teacher (1959), Carry On Constable (1960), and Carry On Columbus (1992).

In 2006, the actor was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Roger Michell's comedy-drama film Venus. He also later received a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2008 in recognition of his incredible contributions to British acting over the decades.

Our thoughts are with Phillips's family during this difficult time, as well as his many fans around the world.
