I kinda doubt this wil get much traction but here we go regardless.
Next month, ie tomorrow, I plan to do one of those self imposed challenge things.

And that is to play nothing but Wii U games for the entire month of June.
It helps thats i have a fairly decent Wii U library, so it wont be too rough.

...Hopefully.

Anybody else ever done something like this ?

KitsuneNight

HoyeBoye

Oooh. I have not but I like the idea. Are you playing just games designed for WiiU, or are you including virtual console titles?

You do any other months? Genuary (only Genesis/mega drive)? PC EnJune?

HoyeBoye

KitsuneNight

@HoyeBoye Just WiiU games.
I don't have any VC games ( and don't like motion controls so the Wii is a no go)
I've done other attemps like xbox only in January
And Saturntember in September.

hell no, i prefer to play what i want, when i want, but good luck with that

@nomither6
I got so many games and so many consoles that half the time i don't even know what to choose.
By artificially limiting myself, I will play games and consoles i haven't even glanced at in months.

@KitsuneNight that’s a good way to go about it, but it’s even better if you actually enjoy it as well, which is why it’s something that wouldn’t work for me because i may get bored . i presume youre more of a single player gamer ? because it could also be difficult to concentrate on getting through a backlog if some good ol PvP is calling you for your daily dose 😆

good luck to you though , june is halfway over anyway

HoyeBoye

How’s it going so far? What’ve you played in the month of Wii jUne?

KitsuneNight

@nomither6
Yeah, I am primarily a single player, so it generally does work out for me.

@HoyeBoye
Well enough i guess , I played less games then I thought I would, but put more time in the ones i did play.
So far i played Amazing Spiderman ( which is a game i like )
Mario Kart 8
Sonic Racing Transformed
Hyrule Wariors
Tekken Tag 2
Smash Bros
Lego Marvel Superheroes
And Need For Speed Most Wanted.

Gave up on that last one, it might be me or the port but the controls seems overly twitch and half the time i was fighting them.

But I stick more with one game, than what i usually do, and that's hop from one to another and get bored easily.
That's I suppose another point of this whole endavour, play the games i got and stick to them.

@Yousef-
Both.
These things usually have a groan worthy pun for a title.
Junetendo
Megadrive March
Saturntember
Doscember
Septandy
GPU June

And its easier to start and keep track of things if you actually start and the beginning of a month.
I think we all have a backlog.
This kind of challenge is more to limit your self to a single platform and play what you got.
Xbox 360 for me in July.

@Yousef-
Or at least commit to it.
I wanted to play only Mac games in March.
That didn't work out.

KitsuneNight

HoyeBoye

@Yousef- You’ve definitely got enough on there to keep you busy for a month. I took a business trip recently and only brought my Playdate. Made me realize that there are games from the original 24 release titles that I’ve never even played. I’m toying with the idea of trying my solo gaming in July be all on playdate. Pulydate?

HoyeBoye

KitsuneNight

Junetendo is almost gone already.
I havent played as much or as many Wii U games as I would have liked, or even thought i would.
But still played more Wii U in a single month than i did in ages.

July I will focus my attention to the Xbos as a platform, Xbox 2001, 360 and One.

@KitsuneNight This sounds like a good idea - but I feel like with the backlog I have over multiple systems it'll be over a year before I might play some systems again! Will probably have to group some of the smaller backlogs together - DS/3DS, GB/GBC/GBA, PS1/PS2 for it to be manageable.

I'm constantly hit with choice overload when deciding what to play next, so I'd grouped my systems into Retro, Handheld, Switch, Xbox and would have a 'currently playing' game on each with a different genre. When I finished one game I'd pick a new game by selecting a random genre for that system with the theory being that I'd be in the mood for something 'current' from at least one of the things I had on the go. In truth though, I'd tend to just play whatever I have on the go on Xbox or Switch as they are the easiest to access for me and the other stuff gets mostly ignored. At least this way I don't have to mess about hooking up a system for a single game that I might ditch after a couple of hours.

Anyway, could think of a suitable pun to pick the system for July so used a random generator to pick.... Game Gear July

@dmcc0
I've considered grouping consoles together, as well as cutting the time frame down from a month to two weeks.
Because otherwise its not feesable to get to play some system more then once a year.
I generally speaking have most of my consoles hooked up but not quite everything.
I just dont have room to spare for some of them.

KitsuneNight

@KitsuneNight Yeah, I don't have a huge backlog on some systems so makes sense to group them - I think I only have about 4 or 5 DS games for example so I'll lump them in with the 3DS which has quite a lot (due to the store closure). I don't think it would be worth me dropping to 2 weeks otherwise I'd probably never finish some longer games.

I've got most of the consoles at least partially hooked up - the cables are all in place, just need to plug in the actual console and dig out a controller but even that is sometimes more effort than I'm willing to put into starting a game! My (potato) PC and older consoles and handhelds are all at a desk upstairs in the bedroom and it tends to get used as a dumping ground for all the 'I'll deal with it later' stuff too so it's usually just a major pain getting anything started because I need to tidy the desk first😅 So much easier just to just grab the Switch or Xbox controller and start with a couple of button presses and - more importantly - having to go nowhere near the bedroom desk!

Looking forward to concentrating on Game Gear through July now.

@dmcc0
One solution doesn't fit all, that much is clear.
I have a humongous backlog on most systems, not helped by the fact that some of them are evergreens with no actual ending.
I've put 300 hours in Euro Truck 2 and Forza Horizon 4 each.
Neither of those has an actual endgame.

It also doesn't help that my gaming pc is of the non potato quality.
A Ryzen 5 with an RTX, it laughs at everything I throw at it.
So that adds another 2000 games ( 1200 steam 800 GOG )

Maybe ill play Xbox in July and focus on pc and that massive backlog for the rest of the year.

KitsuneNight

dmcc0

@KitsuneNight I went through a phase a while back of picking up stuff on Humble Bundles, Epic freebies and Steam Sales so I've still got probably 100+ in the PC backlog even though there are probably some in there that my PC won't even run!

dmcc0

KitsuneNight

And that was Junetendo.
Not an uminitigated disaster, but not an unqualified success either.
I didnt play as much Wii U as i had hoped.
But I did play on the machine.
It's seen quite some use.

I mostly played
Mario Kart 8
Sonic All Star Racing Transformed
Tekken Tag 2
Hyrule Warriors
The Amazing Spiderman
Splatoon
And several Lego games.

Xbox as a platform in July then.

@dmcc0 Yeah thats how I ended up with loads of games I don't even remember buying.
I got 8 pages of keys for games on humble I don't even want.

So my 'Game Gear July' is almost over and I've done pretty well to stick to just Game Gear games, especially as I play GG on the Analogue Pocket so it would be quite easy to pop in a GB or GBA game. I did briefly have a go on the Donkey Kong arcade core on the Pocket when my Nephew came to stay at the weekend as he kept knocking the carts and crashing the games - best let him play something that didn't need a cart!
I didn't play as much as I'd like this month as I've been busy with other stuff, but did manage some time with these:
The Addams Family - Didn't really like this 2D platformer very much. Controls were terrible and wasn't really clear what/where you were supposed to go.
Super Smash TV - Love the arcade version of this and the GG version is really enjoyable too. Controls take a bit of getting used to and it's still impossibly hard, but still great.
Super Space Invaders - Can't really go wrong with Space Invaders to be honest, and this update on the original arcade game was pretty challenging.
The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck - Really fun platformer, quite short though. Probably not helped by the fact I used save states.
The Chessmaster - Chess...on Game Gear. The CPU opponent wasn't great.
Super Monaco GP - A fairly basic version of the arcade game but still, surprisingly, lots of fun. Despite the name, it does have quite a few tracks in addition to Monaco.

I think I'll go for PS3 in August, although I'm likely going to be working away from home for a bit, so might need to change to something more portable if that's the case.
