I consider the PS3/X360 generation to be the start of the modern era for a few reasons: -The widespread switch to HD and the 16:9 format -A big jump in online multiplayer compatibility complete with user profiles, and friends lists -Dedicated online storefronts like the Xbox marketplace and Wii Shop -Achievements/Trophies that still persist in peoples' profiles to this day
Some of these things like the widescreen format and online gaming existed before this generation, but weren't nearly as prevalent.
