Honestly, I think one day we will look back at the Famiclone (and Mega Drive bootlegs etc) propagation around the world as a serious cultural watershed moment, where mainstream gaming culture was made available to 'the global south' countries long before the economic reality would have otherwise allowed. I vaguely remember them costing around the equivalent of 8$ or so, while authentic NES cart (if you could ever find them) were something like 120$
I'm sure Nintendo and other IP holders were hardly thrilled about the bootlegs situation, but those days have shaped the gaming preferences of those of us that grew up in that context- in other words, we've probably more than made up for our childhood piracy with our nostalgic purchases as adults lol
