German studio Byteproduct has announced the coming of a stylish new shmup, blasting off on PC and console platforms in early 2027. Sturmjäger captures the essence of its old-school predecessors while offering a modern, highly futuristic visual style.

Sturmjäger promises 10 stages of adrenalised, bullet-dodging action, with the horizontally-scrolling action taking the player from the farthest reaches of the galaxy to the deepest regions of its oceans.

Byteproduct touts Sturmjäger's gameplay as its primary focus, with a deep, complex scoring system and rewards for executing daring melee attacks, 1CC runs, chains, and killstreaks.

Along with its dazzling, highly-mechanised visual design, Sturmjäger features a custom soundtrack composed by Rafel Dyll, whose work can be heard in other modern shmups such as Ghost Blade, as well as Neo Geo blasters Last Hope and Neo XYX.

Over the coming weeks, Byteproduct will be uploading samples of Sturmjäger's soundtrack to YouTube. Check out Stage 1's theme, "Spacestation," below.

No mention is made of the shmup's story, but the developer notes that Sturmjäger is for players who "want to skip the cinematic fluff and dive straight into the unadulterated, chaotic, and adrenaline-fueled arcade action". And for those looking for a wingman, you're in luck, as local co-op multiplayer is supported.

Sturmjäger launches January 14 on PS5, PC, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch.
