A Japan-exclusive version of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys for the PS2 has just been given a new fan translation, letting you finally experience the game with English text.
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, as you may have already guessed, is the third game in Nihon Falcom's classic Ys series, and got its start as a game for Japanese home computers (such as the PC-8801 and PC-9801) in 1989.
Since then, it has been ported to all manner of consoles and computers, with a small fraction of these being available in English (such as the TurboGrafx-16, SNES, and Sega Genesis versions). However, it would later be reworked into the more frequently localised Ys: The Oath in Felghana, a version of the game that swapped the original side-scrolling for three-dimensional fighting and expanded the scenario with new dialogue and events. This version was released in the US on PSP in 2010 and internationally on PC (via Steam) in 2012.
Compared to The Oath in Felghana, the PS2 version is much more faithful to the original versions on Japanese home computers, particularly the Sharp X68000 version. It retains the same sidescrolling combat, but features "enhanced" graphics and voice acting. Because of this, it was one of the more modern-looking ways to experience the classic title.
The patch is the work of many of the same people who previously translated the PS2 version of Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand. This includes Kaisaan (who was the project lead on that former project, and is handling programming, hacking, and testing), Josep (who has been responsible for the translation on both projects), and Etokapa (who edited the Graphics and the Opening Video). They were helped by the hacker Everdred and the testers/proofreaders wagamamalullaby, Jazzysan, and DRAGONBLEAPIECE.
You can find the GitHub repo for the translation here.
