Here's an interesting bit of news for Atari Jaguar owners. After taking 37 years to complete, Return to Blacktooth: A Head Over Heels Adventure (Colin Porch's sequel to the Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond classic Head Over Heels) is now setting its sights on the Atari machine.
In case you're unaware of the backstory, Colin Porch, the developer of the game, originally conceived the sequel to the 1987 classic back in 1989, while working at Ocean Software, but abandoned it following the rise of home consoles in the early '90s. Earlier this year, however, at the age of 81, he finally set about finishing and releasing it in partnership with retro publisher Thalamus Digital, after encouragement from his former boss at Ocean, Gary Bracey, and getting the go-ahead from Atari, the current rights holder.
The game launched on May 4th, 2026 for Commodore Amiga and Atari ST, with the Amiga version getting an 8 out of 10 from the Time Extension contributor Ashley Day, who stated that fans of the 8-bit original would be "blown away by how good this looks" and described it as "one last drop of magic from a bygone era of gaming." Following that, an Amiga CD32 version was also said to be in development, but it's now clear that isn't the only other version currently in the works, with the publisher Thalamus Digital collaborating with Lawrence Staveley (of Reboot Games) to produce an Atari Jaguar edition of the game.
This Jaguar version of the game is set to launch later this month on August 27th, 2026, and is expected to cost $12.99 (the same price as the Amiga and Atari ST versions).
According to the itch.io page, it will be distributed as a .ROM, designed to work with the Atari Jaguar emulator BigP, or "on real hardware using a compatible flash cartridge such as the GameDrive or SkunkBoard." It is also said to support PAL and NTSC systems, as well as "K and M-type Jaguars."
Here's a brief synopsis, giving some details on what to expect:
"Return to Blacktooth is an old-school isometric arcade adventure and the spiritual successor to the much-revered ‘80s classic Head Over Heels. Guide our eponymous heroes through 300+ rooms laden with cunning puzzles, devious traps, and hidden surprises as they attempt to liberate the galaxy from the grip of the Emperor Blacktooth.
Armed with Head’s formidable jumping and gliding abilities and Heels’ impressive speed and object-stacking abilities, you’ll need every ounce of skill as you explore the game’s five distinct planets in a quest to collect the priceless crowns – and maybe the odd fish or two.
Are you ready to return to Blacktooth?"
