Prince of Persia MSX2

Throughout this site's history, we've covered a few different news stories about Prince of Persia being ported unofficially to other platforms, and it seems like we now have another to add to the growing list.

That's because, decades after its original release for the Apple II, it now appears that a version for the MSX2 is finally finished and ready for release.

Over the last few years, the Belgian-based homebrew developer David Heremans has been working hard to produce an MSX2 version of Jordan Mechner's classic cinematic platformer, and has just posted a final update for the project (as spotted by Xavi Sorinas) ahead of its release next month.

As detailed in the new video, the project was initially developed with a digital release with only Y8950 sound support in mind. However, after someone convinced Heremans that the game deserved a physical release, he ended up partnering with Hans Cnossen and WYZ to add PSG sound chip support as well as some extra music, as the Y8950 since that chip "isn't widely available for MSX."

On account of this, players can now mix and match Y8950 and PSG music and sound effects to their liking in the final version, and that isn't the only feature that's been added, either, with Hereman's also teasing a new intro animation based on the Sega Mega-CD version of the game, the ability to view the manual in-game, and a cheat menu to skip levels and edit the guard behaviour.

I've reached out to David Heremans for more details on his release plans, and will update the article once I hear back.
