I like to play on a TV, with big speakers, if possible.

My "main" setup is as follows:

8bitdo Ultimate 2 and Pro 3 controllers, docked to my

LCD Steamdeck, docked to a

50" Samsung 720p Plasma TV that I bought in 2007, hooked up to an

Onkyo Multichannel Home Theater Receiver, powering

2x 1985 Klipsch Forte tower mains, and

2x c.1980's Klipsch KG2 bookshelf speakers directly left and right, as satellite/surround speakers, and a

Large No Name powered sub I got at a garage sale for 20 bucks

my other setup in my house is

Various Legacy consoles, mostly from my own childhood, into a

27" RCA s-video CRT from the early 00s, hooked up with a

BOSE 3•2•1 all-in-one dvd player/amp with 2 small sats and a sub

anyway! anyone else feel like sharing? I would love to hear about your setup, whether you like old TVs and big loud speakers like I do, or play tetris on a plugged in DMG laying on your couch like my friend's mom used to do when we were in school 🤓👍

thanks for visiting!

The no-name subwoofer doesn't fit with the rest of the list, but I'm sure it gets the job done. And I still like 720p. Nice lifespan out of that TV. I'm not getting anything 4K until I have no real choice.

For handheld, I opted to go with a Razer Edge after reading a review on some site called Time Extension. It got a sweet black Friday discount that really made that device make sense. Most of my emulation needs are modest, but it does emulate Gamecube and PS2 when I need that. It's my second device with OLED and WiFi6, both of which mean little to me. The Edge is a mini tablet that came with a telescoping controller, and I picked up 8bitdo's telescoping controller for another option. I think the 8bitdo has better button feel. It's Bluetooth only, as opposed to the Razer controller having a USB-C connector, but in my lag testing it is low enough that it doesn't add any lag, so it is effectively the same.

I have a bunch of original consoles, including four PC Engines, but they're not hooked up right now and are put away. So for retro, I stick with emulation, most of which can be done on anything. So I've used a bunch of laptops, from third-gen to eleventh-gen Intel chips. And I have a bunch of mini PCs as well, mostly off-lease business machines(they're addictive). My main setup involves a cheap LCD TV(the cheap ones work fine for me), 42" I think. I could have gone bigger if more TVs had a center stand than two legs toward the edges. Oh well. The star of the show is Dell Optiplex mid tower with an Intel i7-4770 from 2013. I got it in 2018 specifically to do Saturn emulation(I have two Saturns, both broken). It has held up well and according to the internet, the fourth-gen i7s can still go pretty far for PC gaming. I was looking into replacing it at the end of last year, but with the RAM-pockalypse and not finding too many used machines with CPUs that were much faster, I decided to upgrade it and ride out the next few years. I found some cheap DDR3 RAM bringing it up to 24GB, added a respectable GPU in the RX 6600, and a new-old-stock quality power supply because the stock one was probably not going to cut it. The GPU was so big I had to fully tear down the computer and remove a drive cage I don't particularly need. That was fun because it required drilling and prying! It's been working rather well and the total cost of the upgrades was not much, plus I think I can get a nice coupon elsewhere to defray more of the cost. Apparently, it's somewhere between a PS4 Pro and a PS5 in performance, not that it matters since I'm maxed out at 1080p. There aren't many 3D games that catch my interest that need more CPU than what I have, and there are tons of old games I missed that I can play instead.

I picked up an extra small form factor machine from HP for my old GPU. Part of the reason I bought it was for the RAM. I still have to set up that machine and figure out where to put it, but that will give me another machine to game on.

My “Library” (corner of basement surrounded by bookshelves) has one wall dedicated to old computers/video games/movies.

Intel Pentium 66 PC running DOS/Win3.11 with a 14” CRT VGA Monitor

24” Toshiba CRT from 2004 that hosts the following:

  • Pioneer DVL-909 (Primary laserdisc player)
  • Pioneer CLD-S104 (Backup laserdisc player)
  • Cheap late 90s Emerson VCR
  • Nintendo 64
  • Nintendo GameCube
  • Nintendo Wii (Homebrew channel installed)

19” Sony Trinitron from 1983 that hosts the following:

  • Sega Genesis Model 1 High Def Graphics
  • Sega Genesis Model 2 w/ 32x
  • Atari 2600
  • Intellivison (INTV System III) w/ Voice Module
  • Magnavox Odyssey 2
  • Sears Pong clone

Sitting on the floor is a 19” mid-90s Sharp CRT that’s perfect for the 2 tate mode games I can play on it. The shape of it is such that it sits at an angle to be easily seen from the couch. I either need to clear space on a shelf for it (and get a way to play more Tate games to justify its place on the shelf, maybe a Saturn) or get rid of it.

Also have an iMac G5 iSight, but have found I have little love for it and will probably disconnect it soon.
