I picked up Pokemon on launch because it seemed like a quirky little JRPG title and I liked the trading gimmick. Nintendo made sure we were aware of it, but there was a brief period where it didn't make much of a ripple. It wasn't until the anime came out a few months later that the U.S. felt the full force of "Gotta Catch 'em All!"
She was "Princess Toadstool" for most of my youth. I remember being just a little bit baffled at the voiceover and letter in the Mario 64 intro just saying, "Peach." at the end. It seemed really random.
Puzzle De Pon is my JAM! I can't even look at these screenshots without mentally trying to figure out how I'd slide the pieces into the best places. Pokémon Puzzle League was my favorite incarnation, because I liked how it integrated the Pokémon catching aspect of things.

Now it's as natural as anything.
