One of the best boons of video game remakes is how they offer opportunities to tweak, expand, or enhance the experiences that came before, utilising modern-day power, or simply contemporary game design knowledge, to boost a classic title with features perhaps unavailable to the original developer.
In the case of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, however, one modder is going one step further. As reported by Gaming Reinvented, AnAxemRanger is taking features added to the 2023 Nintendo Switch remake and backporting them into the original 1996 SNES release.
AnAxemRanger's Super Mario RPG Demake project recreates some of the modes and mechanics of ArtePiazza's remake and reimagines them within its 16-bit predecessor. These include in-game changes such as new weapons (Wonder Chomp!), equipment, and accessories; postgame boss battles and rematches; and what appears to be an enhanced version of the "Teamwork Pin" ability.
From a quality-of-life perspective, Super Mario RPG Demake adds Fast Travel options for some of the adventure's lengthier stages, the recreation of some additional cutscenes, and the ability to speed up on-screen dialogue by holding down the B button. Given the humble SNES ROM size, something had to go to make way for all of this new code, so a selection of tutorials has been removed from the game, along with the intro cinematic and a handful of superfluous narrative scenes.
The SNES edition of Super Mario RPG never saw European shores. Outside of importing, it was the rare Super Mario title whispered of in UK magazines and playgrounds. As such, it passed many players by, with their first experience being either the 2008 Wii Virtual Console release or the 2023 remake.
If your only experience with Super Mario RPG is the Switch edition, then perhaps give AnAxemRanger's demake a try and experience a bit of Super Mario history that, for many years, was all but lost to the green pipe of time.
