Gley Lancer Overdrive

Nalua Studio, the developer of games like Necro Pop and Vengeance Hunters, has released the first trailer for Gley Lancer: Overdrive, a reimagining of NCS Corp and Masaya's 1992 Mega Drive title Gley Lancer for the Neo Geo and modern platforms (PlayStation, Switch, Xbox, Steam).

Gley Lancer was originally released for the Sega 16-bit console in Japan and Korea, but didn't originally receive a Western release. However, over the last decade, it has eventually received a much wider release due to Ratalaika Games' port for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in October 2021, and Retro-Bit's cartridge version for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis in 2023 (which infamously reused the fan translator MIJET's work without permission).

In case you're wondering how this version will differ from what has come before, Nalua Studio has offered a short explanation behind its philosophy for this new version in the video description for the trailer, stating it will hopefully feel like a parallel version of, and a "loving salute" to, the original Mega Drive release:

"We began development with this idea: imagine receiving the original design documents, artwork, and story concepts for Gley Lancer. Then tasked to create a parallel version of the game specifically for the Neo Geo. This was a common practice in the 90's when multiple studios were tasked with creating similar but different games for platforms they were subject matter experts of. We have designed Gley Lancer: Overdrive by channeling that exact spirit.

Gley Lancer: Overdrive pays homage to the Mega Drive original while adding some Neo Geo flavour to its stages, presentation, sound FX, soundtrack, mechanics, cinematics and more."

Here's a short description of the game's story:

"In the far distant year of 2025, Federation Navy pilot, Lucia Cabrock, secretly takes control of the experimental fighter Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer after her father's ship, the Oberon, was abducted during a battle with an unknown alien force. Defying orders, she takes the Gley Lancer prototype deep into hostile space to uncover his fate and bring him home."

As things stand, there is no release date, and the Steam page for the game is still awaiting approval, but you can watch the trailer below to get an idea of how it is shaping up:
