Nintendo's Tennis - one of the first releases for the NES and a U.S. launch title for the Game Boy - has made its way to Sega's 8-bit baby, the Master System. The unofficial port comes courtesy of the suitably monikered homebrewer "OldSchool is Cool".

The Master System conversion is built on the Game Boy edition, first released in 1989. "Master Tennis" translates the Game Boy code, line-by-line, to be compatible with the Master System's Z80 processor.

The speed, opponent AI, and physics match those of the handheld edition, though OldSchool has rewritten the graphics, sound, and controls for the Sega platform. Additionally, cross-court smashes have been toned down from their GB intensity.

Here is a video of the port in action, courtesy of homebrew fan Hack Games Longplay Channel.

Of course, Master Tennis is also in glorious colour, sporting lush green courts, individually outfitted spectators, and red-and-blue overalls for our guest referee, Mario. Mario on the Master System, 10-year-old me would think we were all mad... MAAAAAAD!

The Master Tennis SMS file works with Master System emulators, or can be saved to flash carts for use with real hardware (with additional support for the console's "Pause" button). Admittedly, it's a little late in the season for a round of tennis - I dug the cardigan out just this weekend - but for those of you who like your sporting events chilly and washed out, have at it.
