After years of being exclusive to Xbox, Blue Dragon has been ported unofficially to the PC, as reported by PC Gamer.
Re:Blue is described as a "a static recompilation" of Mistwalker & Artoon's ambitious RPG that originally launched in Japan in 2006 (and one year later, internationally in 2007) on Xbox 360; this is a game that famously released on 3 discs, and not only featured artwork by Dragon Quest's Akira Toriyama, but a scenario from the Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, and music from Nobuo Uematsu.
The new port is the work of Tom, the programmer behind ReXGlue, a toolset for creating recompilations of Xbox 360 games. As with similar projects, it requires players to provide the original game files before combining all three discs into a single executable file, bringing together a bunch of modernisations and quality-of-life improvements.
It has been described by PC Gamer's Wesley Fenlon (who has had some hands-on time with it) as "by far the most polished and fully featured recompilation" built using the technology,
In contrast to other ReXGlue projects, which have typically been a hybrid of recompilation and emulation (via Xenia) to produce fast results, Tom and his collaborators have gone to a lot of effort to create "a native renderer tailored to the game engine and modern PC graphics cards," in order to act as a demonstration of what the toolset is capable of.
"My standards have always been pretty high when it comes to this kind of stuff—I like to make quality products," Tom told Fenlon, before writing, "Going into this, I was fairly naive that a lot of this could be generalized. But [now] I don't know how much of that is true.
"When it comes down to making it look nice, and the features, that's all going to be game-specific. I think that's the beauty and the distinguishing factor between emulation and recomps. With emulation, you're going to get the original thing, and it's probably going to play pretty damn well. Good enough for most people. But if there's a group of people crazy enough to want to port a game to PC, this is where they would come and find ReXGlue and spend the time to make it look good. Put the effort in, and not just make it a standalone emulator, really, which I think there's no value in. There is value in adding extra quality-of-life features."
Re:Blue is scheduled to launch this Friday on GitHub and is said to include an impressive list of features, such as "resolutions up to 4K, windowed or fullscreen," a range of aspect ratios to pick (16:9, 4:3, 16:10, 21:9, 32:9), unlocked frame rates, fully native keyboard and mouse support, achievements, and much more.
