The original Metroid for the Famicom Disk System recently turned 40, prompting a ton of people online to share their favourite memories of the series.
In the case of one fan, opossumcarrion, however, they've gone a little further than simply firing off a few brief words in a tweet, creating what they call a "legally distinct homage to the original 1986 Metroid."
Demake86, or "Legally Distinct Action Adventure Platforming Game set on a Meteoroid," to give it its full title, is a tiny Metroidvania set on an "86 pixel meteoroid," which is playable in your browser. While fun enough taken at a steady pace, it seems purpose-built for speedrunners, with the creator, opossumcarrion, challenging players to beat it before the in-game timer reaches 86 seconds.
Instead of Samus, players take control of a character named Relan Gras (a figure who bears more than a passing resemblance to Nintendo's bounty hunter). Here, though, instead of morph balls and energy tanks, the game has players roll up into a "tuck ball" and collect "e-vials," with the Planet Zebes being nowhere in sight, replaced by the similar-yet-distinct Planet Zenith.
It's all a bit silly and tongue-in-cheek, with the developer stating that there's so little music in the game because of "an intentional auditory design decision around the interplay of sound and silence" and "also because Nintendo's lawyers are very, very scary."
