Andy Davidson, the creator of Worms, recently returned to the hit series he created to release an expansion pack for Worms: The Director's Cut for the Amiga, and it seems that it has got him rummaging around in his personal archives.

The result? He's recently unearthed a pretty fascinating letter, which he has since posted on social media, showing one of his early exchanges with Team17 co-founder Mick Robinson, after the developer/publisher originally agreed to sign the game.

As has been covered pretty extensively in the past, Worms began life as an artillery game heavily inspired by the tiny characters of DMA Design's Lemmings, and was later rewritten under the name Total Wormage for entry in an Amiga Format contest in 1993 (which Davidson ultimately lost). Undeterred, however, Davidson later travelled to a 1994 European Computer Trade Show and began pitching the game to publishers, with Team17's Martyn Brown, in particular, being taken with the project and wanting to publish it as soon as possible.

The letter Davidson shared is dated September 15th, 1994, and appears to have been sent after contracts between Team17 and the developer were signed, referencing a £2,000 contract-signing fee. What's more interesting to us, though, is Robinson's response to the game itself, which seems to both foreshadow the game's later success (with reference to workers staying late to play it) while also reading somewhat quaint elsewhere, given what came after.

"Having taken the game home and played it with my daughter," Robinson wrote, "I must say it is one of the most addictive games I have played for a very long time.

He continued, "I am sure it will do very well for you. The people in the office stay behind after work to play it, which is some compliment."

Since Davidson posted the letter yesterday, it has been shared over 1000 times and has nearly 28k likes on the website, seemingly conjuring up many fond memories among nostalgic fans.

Inevitably, in the comments, people wanted an update on what Davidson's relationship with Team17 looks like today; in response, he told fans, "Team17 have always looked after me. I’m in regular contact with them," before promoting the expansion pack, which was developed with Team17's backing.
