Comix Zone

The homebrew developer Frogbull has brought us some bizarre crossovers over the past few years: from creating playable versions of PlayStation classics like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, and Crash Bandicoot for the Sega Saturn to showing off a Nintendo 64 edition of Spyro the Dragon.

More recently, he's been busy sharing his progress on reverse engineering the original Panzer Dragoon (even teasing a possible Dreamcast port of the Sega Saturn classic)

However, it seems that isn't all he's been working away on in the background, with the developer recently taking to Twitter/X to share another project from "an alternate reality": Comix Zone 64.

Comix Zone was a Sega Technical Institute-developed beat 'em up released for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis in 1995, and has been reissued several times over the years across various console compilations, but understandably never made its way to the N64 (because of Nintendo and Sega's rivalry and the year it was released).

Now, though, Frogbull has decided to correct that, releasing a playable version of the classic sidescrolling game, which runs on real N64 hardware and humorously imagines a fictional scenario where Sega were forced out of the console market:

"In an alternate reality, the Nintendo Ultra 64 reigned supreme over the 5th generation of video game consoles.

Sega went completely bankrupt after countless lawsuits from people who suffered intense emotional overload and severe motion sickness after playing Daytona USA R360 Turbo Edition in the Arcades.

With no other choice, they were forced to release their gems on other platforms instead of the Sega Neptune... and thus, Comix Zone 64 was born..."
