Seibu Kaihatsu's shoot em up Raiden Project is getting a new release on consoles (Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5), courtesy of Hamster's Console Archives series.

Released in 1995, Raiden Project (or The Raiden Project, depending on your preference) is a port of the arcade Raiden (1990) and Raiden II (1993) to the Sony PlayStation, and came with a new introductory 3D cutscene, a horizontal mode to play the game in its original arcade aspect ratio, difficulty settings, and a choice between the original arcade and newly rearranged soundtracks.

It was developed by a small team inside Seibu Kaihatsu, including the Australian programmer Richard Honeywood, and was originally intended to be a launch title for the PlayStation in Japan, but was ultimately shipped one month after the console arrived in stores. If you want to learn more about the game, we previously spoke to Honeywood earlier this year about the making of the game.

During this conversation, he shared with us how Sony Music approached Seibu Kaihatsu to work on the project, the circumstances surrounding the initial meeting between the two companies (and Hitoshi Hamada's dislike for beards), as well as the odd bit of trivia that the developer allegedly funded the project in part from profits from a strip mahjong game.

As is usually the case with Console Archives, the version included here is the Japanese-language edition of the game, but given the mostly text-less nature of the game, we imagine that will probably matter a lot less to people than it has done with some of the strategy titles and RPGs Hamster has been reissuing in the past.

Here's a short description of the game, courtesy of Hamster:

"RAIDEN PROJECT" was released by SEIBU KAIHATSU in 1995 for a 32-bit home console.

As a pilot of the ultra high-altitude fighter-bomber "RAIDEN" and "RAIDEN II", fight to save Earth from the invasion of Alien that suddenly appeared!

This title is a full-fledged vertical-scrolling shooting game that includes both "RAIDEN", an arcade vertical-scrolling shooting game released in 1990 that gained explosive popularity, and "RAIDEN II", which was released three years later and was also very popular."

The game will be available to buy tomorrow (October 22nd, 2026) and will include "customizable button layouts, rapid-fire settings, multiple save points", and additional screen filters. It will cost $11.99 across both platforms.
