Data East's 1987 arcade platformer Karnov is making its way to modern consoles (Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S) this week, on September 10th, as part of Arcade Archives / Arcade Archives 2.
So if you don't already happen to own an Everdrive console and the Windjammers: Karnov & Friends collection, have a fondness for Circus Strongmen, or all of the above, now's your chance to dive into the bizarre arcade adventure on modern platforms, with some new modes and other features thrown in for good measure.
Karnov, as you may be aware, follows the adventure of Jinborov Karnovski as he travels across nine stages in search of pieces of a treasure map, breathing fire, collecting items (boots, bombs, ladders, etc), and battling everything from spear-wielding fishmen to flying gargoyles and skeletons riding ostriches (we told you it was bizarre!) Initially released in arcades, the game was also later brought to the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, NES, DOS computers, and Mac.
Despite never receiving a traditional sequel, the protagonist would later appear across a number of other Data East titles, typically as an enemy. This includes games like Garyo Retsuden, Tumblepop, Trio the Punch, Bad Dudes Vs DragonNinja, Fighter's Revenge, Karnov's Revenge, and Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu!!
The Arcade Archives version of the game for Switch and PS4 will cost $7.99. The Arcade Archives 2 version, meanwhile, with an added Time Attack Mode and other exclusive features, will be priced at $9.99.
In addition to Karnov, Hamster also announced that this week's Console Archives title will be the 1990 strategy sequel Nobunaga's Ambition II for the NES/Famicom. It will be released on PS5 and Switch 2 tomorrow (September 10th, again) and is said to include both the Japanese and English versions for $7.99.
Here's the official description for that game:
"NOBUNAGA’S AMBITION II" was released by KOEI in 1990 for an 8-bit home console.
In this authentic simulation war game, play as a Sengoku Daimyo (warlord), command a vast array of unique officers, and utilise every strategy and tactic at your disposal to unify all 38 fiefs spanning regions such as Kanto and Chubu.
Expanding upon its predecessor, "NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION", this entry features a multi-scenario system with two distinct scenarios, HEX battles expanded to include both open battles and siege battles, and a roster of approximately 400 real historical samurai! Enrich your fief, skillfully lead and manage your unique retainers, and expand your domain through warfare and diplomacy to achieve the ultimate goal of unifying Japan!"
