Some of you watching yesterday's State of Play stream might have been bewitched by the reveal of the LEGO Sony PlayStation, which made its official debut in all its brick-building glory. Sony has since released additional details, announcing that the cool-looking nostalgia box will go on sale October 4, priced at €159.99 / $179.99.
Made up of 1911 pieces, the LEGO PlayStation is considered an adult collectable and is thus rated '18+. Explicit'. The completed model is 10.5 inches wide, making it just under 1:1 with the original console, which took the entire gaming scene by storm way back in December 1994.
The LEGO edition includes a replica of the original non-DualShock PlayStation controller and features interactive Power and Eject buttons, as well as a flip-top disc cover. The LEGO PlayStation is packaged in a box recreating the artwork of the console's first Western release.
As an inventive final feature, the LEGO PlayStation has interchangeable dioramas, representing two of the platform's beloved releases, namely polished racing simulator Gran Turismo and madcap platformer Ape Escape (which, paradoxically, did require use of a DualShock controller).
The latter game has been MIA for some time now, with fans often asking whether we'll ever see the crazy, colourful title ever again. For the time being, it seems that this cutesy representation is about as close as we're going to get
The LEGO PlayStation joins a line of extremely LEGO console replicas that already includes the NES, Game Boy, Sega Mega Drive controller, and even the Atari 2600. As is often the case with prestige LEGO sets, some of these releases have since been "retired" from sale, and are often found retailing at hugely inflated prices via the after-sale market. Whether the LEGO PlayStation will follow suit remains to be seen.
