Stern Pinball has revealed the latest title to join its ongoing range of rad pinball machines, "rad" being the operative word. Based on Amazon Prime's smash-hit TV show, Fallout captures all the mayhem and misery of post-apocalyptic Los Angeles and scales it right down for fast-flipping fun.
Fallout allows players to traverse the L.A. wasteland as various characters from the series, including vault dweller Lucy McClean (Ella Parnell), Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus (Aaron Moten), and the ever-popular gunslingin' ghoul Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins).
Braving the irradiated debris of the former City of Angels, players will visit famous landmarks from the show, collect Nuka-Cola caps for trading, and do battle with an array of nightmarish monsters, including ghouls, radscorpions, and the fearsome Deathclaw.
In typical Stern Pinball fashion, Fallout has a feature-packed playfield including a rolling Vault 33 ball lock, a replicated "Fat Man" launcher, and, perhaps best of all, a Pip-Boy 3000 mkV, complete with its own pseudo-LED screen for scoring and mode info. Fallout also features a mini-playfield embedded within the centre of the machine, representing the vault interior.
That's pretty smart design, though I will admit that, artistically, the playfield is a little "busy" for my tastes. Still, it certainly catches the vibe of the series perfectly, and with a soundtrack inspired by the original video game series, this is about as close as you'd want to be to the Fallout universe.
Of course, we must eventually discuss matters of cost, which is where Fallout, like all modern pinball machines, goes nuclear. The standard Pro model will retail for $7,299 and features a modest cabinet design with artwork depicting the Battle of Griffith Observatory.
The Premium model, retailing for $10,699, features a more stylised art design, powder-coated framing, and art depicting the Brotherhood of Steel's Deathclaw war on the streets of New Vegas.
Finally, for all you Tenpenny Tower residents, there's the Limited Edition model, retailing for $13,999. The Fallout LE features an instantly recognisable blue-and-yellow design, with artwork centred on Fallout's iconic mascot Pip-Boy - always there to greet wasteland wanderers with a smile.
