1995's EVE Burst Error kicked off a franchise which is still going strong to this very day, with the most recent entry being 2022's EVE Ghost Enemies – but it's easy to forget that this visual novel franchise began its life as an erotic (or 'eroge') title on the PC-98 home computer, with the subsequent console versions censoring much of the mature content.
Now, fans have made a new patch available that "injects a heavily cleaned and partially retranslated version of Himeya Soft's English localisation of the Windows version of EVE: Burst Error back into its original uncensored PC-98 version."
According to the readme behind the patch, "about 55-60% of the script has been altered in one way or another," adding that the many jokes in the Windows version aimed at Bill Clinton have been expunged.
This patch has long been requested by fans of the series. Back in 2022, TheDogemaster_ posted this succinct explanation of the state of the series in English on Reddit:
"EVE has issues in the English world. The Windows version, the only version that’s in English, is god awful compared to the original. The translation is horrible, littered with constant Bill Clinton jokes. The soundtrack uses inferior MIDI instead of FM synth. And the biggest sin of all, it’s censored. What about the remakes? Not in English. Plus, they’re based on the censored Sega Saturn version. Everyone is getting robbed of a definitive remaster of this game. We need this game retranslated and uncensored."
