Good article but gotta correct something. Kryten first appeared in series 2, before being redesigned for series 3 and appearing regularly from then on.
The explanation for why is in the sped up star wars text intro to series 3, if you slow it down. At the end of said series 2 episode "kryten", after kryten ruins runners portrait and throws soup all over his bunk, he gets on Listers space bike in his leathers, and crashes while going through an asteroid belt.
This is the justification for the remodel of kryten, but we all know the real reason is that the original kryten was absolutely terrifying.
