Castlevania means different things to different people, but a generation of players, when they think about the franchise, immediately recalls Ayami Kojima's sumptuous artwork, which has graced entries such as Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, and Lament of Innocence.
This year marks Castlevania's 40th anniversary, and Konami has launched a site celebrating that fact. Recently, posts have circulated on social media claiming the artwork featured on the site was created for the occasion by Kojima herself, but (as lovely as the art is) that's sadly not the case.
The artwork is actually from 2019, and was created by Kojima for Grimoire of Souls – which is being taken offline soon. The "Monsters" art has also been used in Castlevania Advance Collection.
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse launches soon, but the cover for that features a new piece of art by Katsuya Terada.
Of course, this doesn't mean that Kojima hasn't produced something else for Castlevania's birthday, which takes place on September 26th – but time is running out for any kind of announcement. Maybe it will come during this week's Konami Press Start showcase?
