Capcom has stated that it is looking to bring a little life back to some of its dormant franchises, following the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
The publisher made the comments in its recently released investor report:
"In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including [Onimusha]."
Released just last week, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first outing for the supernatural samurai franchise in 20 years, following the 2006 PS2 release Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.
Way of the Sword racked up an impressive one million sales on its first day of release, pushing total sales for the Onimusha franchise past the 10 million mark. The new game sees legendary figure Miyamoto Musashi battle an army of demons in a highly fantasised take on Edo-era Kyoto, Japan.
As one of the first releases of this new endeavour, Way of the Sword's first-day sales have no doubt gotten Capcom bigwigs digging through the studio's extensive portfolio - looking for equally nostalgic-yet-adaptable franchises.
While popular series such as Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Breath of Fire spring instantly to mind, Capcom could look further, resurrecting series such as Strider, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Red Earth, or Steel Battalion. Obviously, the biggest T-Rex in the room is Dino Crisis, a series that last saw the sun in 2003 and is frequently called out in New Sequel conversation.
Capcom has always held its iconic franchises close to its heart, with a steady stream of frequent retro compilations, remasters, and re-releases. Street Fighter 6 even gives away classic Capcom games monthly, via its Fighting Pass system. And with Onimusha's acclaimed comeback, it might be time to dust off some of those series that still have tales to tell and, notably, copies to sell. Let's go, Gun.Smoke.
